Baseball in Lynchburg

Lynchburg Hillcats Game

Baseball in Lynchburg has had adoring fans since the middle of the 19th century. Lynchburg dedicated a great deal of property to playing fields, including two stadiums. In 1886, Lynchburg fielded its first professional team, the “Lynchburgs.” The Hill City hosted Major League exhibition games as the teams left spring training to head north. The Lynchburg Museum has an exhibit dedicated to baseball on display until June 3, 2024. Admission is always free. See LynchburgMuseum.org for open days and hours, as well as other special events, programs, and guided tours throughout the year.

Watch Baseball Locally

With 5 universities and colleges in the city, various levels of college athletics are in season throughout the year! If you’re a sports fan, this is the perfect way to enjoy a live game. In the spring, Liberty University has a Division I baseball team with a beautiful stadium. The University of Lynchburg also has a competitive Division III baseball team.

Lynchburg has its very own minor-league baseball team! The Hillcats are a single A team affiliated with the Cleveland Guardians. With the season running from April through September, the Bank of the James Stadium is a perfect place to spend an evening and get some ballpark food. Fans can expect theme nights and discounts throughout the season.
Find a sports bar to catch a game and hang out. Some of the best spots to cheer your team on include Stadium Inn, Jo Jo’s Pizza, All American Sports Bar & Grill, Oliver’s, Scoreboards, Beer 88, and Hill City Pub. Conveniently, The World Famous Stadium Inn is located just across the street from the Hillcats’ home stadium.
If you’re interested in playing baseball or softball yourself, be sure to check out Lynchburg Parks and Recreation for their adult co-ed and men’s leagues.
